It's warm where I am; soft sun on my skin. Everything is green and yellow and alive. The air is fresh, cool; it cleans my lungs as I breathe in. A tiny had takes mine and pulls me, faster, up the mountain.
The hand pulling me into the darkness is bigger, freezing cold.
"Clark, wake up."
"Jesus Christ, Lex, it's the middle of the night. And I was having a really good dream."
I turn away, throw a pillow over my head. He's having none of it. His cold hands are back, pushing me on my back and sitting up, straddling my hips.
"Was it that fucking mountain one again? Calm down, Clark, you'll have it again tomorrow."
Lex leans over, kisses my neck and pulls my t-shirt up, like it isn't the middle of the night.
"I thought we were too old for this kind of thing," I say but encourage him on with fingers down his back.
"That was before I realized we haven't had sex in weeks."
He rocks his hips down; I push up to meet him.
"Didn't I warn you about having kids?"
"You did, Lex. Mmm, God, why didn't I listen?"
He sits up, pulls off his shirt as I wriggle out of my own. But before his lips are back on mine, the door opens and there's a voice.
"I need a drink of water."
Lex rolls away with a groan and I get up, finding my shirt in the bit of light slivered through the door.
"I'll be right there, sweetie."
Nicky closes the door. I lean down and put a kiss on Lex's lips.
"I'll be waiting," he says.
He'll be asleep when I get back. But we can try this again tomorrow. There are always tomorrows.
